Haydock's commentary

Machir, grandson of Joseph, whose descendants occupied part of Galaad, (Haydock) of which he is styled the father, or prince. (Menochius)

The daughter of Machir was probably an heiress, and Segub dwelt with his mother's tribe. (Calmet)
