Et egredietur Dominus, et præliabitur contra gentes illas, sicut præliatus est in die certaminis.

Haydock's commentary

Shall. Septuagint, "will stand in battle array among," &c. (parataxetai en) though he will one day punish the victorious Romans. (Haydock)

Now he fought with them as [the] Hebrew may signify. (Calmet)

Various prodigies made this clear: (Josephus, Jewish Wars vii. 12, 16.) so that Titus would not receive the crown which was presented to him, as he looked upon himself only as the instrument employed by divine justice. (Philost. vi. 14.)

This sense is given by St. Cyril, &c. (Calmet)

In the days of Epiphanes, God defeated his projects. (Haydock)

Where a note speaks of the Jewish people, the Church teaches that the Passion cannot be charged against all the Jews then living, nor against the Jews of today, and that all sinners were its authors (CCC 597, 598).
